LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - On Wednesday dozens gathered to lay to rest a Louisville born veteran who passed away in September.
Those in attendance were not related to the veteran by blood, rather by service for their country.
Terry Swanner served as a radio operator in the Navy. He was born in Louisville and passed away at the age of 57.
At his committal service on Wednesday not a single person in attendance knew Swanner personally.
“It’s sad to see any veteran pass away with no family,” Army Veteran Benny Florian said. “There’s so many vets in the area that have time to come down, so I did”
When Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central found out about the situation, they put a call out on their Facebook page to local veterans and community members to be in attendance.
And they showed up.
