WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - A groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday marked the beginning of a solution to a devastating reality: nearly half of teens aging out of Kansas’ foster care system will become homeless by the time the young adults turn 21.

EmberHope, a foster care organization, broke ground on Hope Estates, a new housing complex in Newton designed specifically for young adults transitioning out of foster care. The development will provide affordable housing for 28 young adults when it opens in one year.

The need is urgent in Kansas communities. A recent report shows 42% of young adults leaving the foster care system in Sedgwick County were homeless by age 21. EmberHope says these young adults often end up living on the streets or couch-surfing with no permanent place to call home.
