NEW ORLEANS — The U.S. Supreme Court heard two and a half hours of arguments in the Louisiana congressional redistricting case, Louisiana v. Callais.

At issue: whether creating a second majority-minority district violated the U.S. Constitution.

The outcome of the case could determine the future of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, a key protection against racial discrimination in voting.

NAACP Legal Defense Fund attorney Janai Nelson warned that eliminating the provision could have widespread consequences.

"My opponents' late-breaking and record list facial and applied challenges seek a staggering reversal of precedent that would throw maps across the country into chaos," Nelson said, referring to legal challenges that question both the law itself and its specific application.
