Dwayne Johnson’s performance as MMA fighter Mark Kerr in 'The Smashing Machine' has received a notable endorsement from director Christopher Nolan.
Speaking on The Director’s Cut podcast with director Benny Safdie, Nolan called Johnson’s performance "heartbreaking".
The praise comes as Johnson’s Oscar campaign for best actor gains momentum, even as the film faces box office challenges.
'The Smashing Machine' stars Emily Blunt as Kerr’s wife and follows Kerr’s struggles in MMA and his personal life. The film debuted at the Venice Film Festival, where Safdie won best director.
Despite this, the movie’s $5.9 million opening was a career low for Johnson, and it has earned $10 million domestically against a $50 million budget.
Nolan praised Johnson’s work, stating: "I think it’s an incredi
