CONNECTICUT, USA — An Afghan interpreter was released from the custody of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Tuesday and reunited with his family in Connecticut, according to state officials.
ICE agents seized the interpreter, named Zia, on July 16 outside a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services center in East Hartford, according to the office of U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal.
Zia was placed into ICE detention in Massachusetts, according to court documents, and was issued an Order of Expedited Removal due to a claim that he entered the U.S. without authorization and without documents, according to Blumenthal's office. A federal judge has temporarily stayed Zia's removal.
He spent over two months in detention, which Blumenthal described as "unlawful" and "unconscionable."
