NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The family of 15-year-old Kaiden Phillips is calling on lawmakers, parents and the community to step up after the teen was shot and killed by a 13-year-old in New Haven late last month.

Police said the shooting happened on Sept. 27 near Bassett Street. Officers found Kaiden unresponsive at the scene. He was rushed to the hospital where he later died.

A 13-year-old boy has been charged with murder and carrying a pistol without a permit. According to police, the two teens had a prior confrontation and the suspect had been previously arrested. Investigators believe the deadly encounter may have stemmed from an ongoing argument.

Kaiden’s family said the tragedy was preventable and is urging both local officials and the wider community to take immediate action.
