LOUISINA (KLFY) -- The U.S. Supreme Court is deliberating a pivotal case, Louisiana vs. Callais, which could redefine the relationship between the Voting Rights Act and the Constitution's Equal Protection Clause.

The case, argued before the justices Wednesday morning, centers on whether Section 2 of the 1965 Voting Rights Act can coexist with the constitutional mandate that all voters be treated equally, regardless of race or color.

"It shows the level of confusion that has been created by the court's precedent in this area," said Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill after the hearing. "If you think they're confused, you should see how confusing it is for legislatures."
