BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - Dozens of frustrated Birmingham residents packed Parker High School’s auditorium Wednesday night to demand action on the city’s growing stray animal problem, which has become the number one complaint sent to city hall through 311.
The Birmingham City Council opened the floor to hear directly from residents about what should be done with the animals roaming their neighborhoods as officials revealed staggering statistics about the scope of the crisis.
Alarming numbers reveal scope of problem
City Council President Darrell O’Quinn said between January 2023 and September 2025, the city received 20,494 calls related to animal control. The Jefferson County Department of Health reported between 170 and 180 dog bites in Birmingham per year.
