RAY BROOK, N.Y. (WCAX) - Federal corrections officers across the nation -- including the Federal Correctional Institution at Ray Brook -- are caught in the middle of Congress’s government shutdown and they continue to go without pay.
“Not to get paid for this is un-American,” said Jose Rojas, a retired federal corrections officer with the American Federation of Government Employees union.
Rojas worked in Florida during the longest government shutdown, spanning 35 days in 2018. “I actually had to get a job working as an Uber after my working hours because you are not allowed working during your shift,” Rojas said.
He says the shutdown has weakened morale even further after the Federal Bureau of Prisons ended its contract with the labor union that represented workers at prisons like FCI R
