BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Disgraced ex-Baton Rouge officer Donald Steele Jr. stood before District Judge Don Johnson on Thursday and learned his fate.

Steele Jr., now convicted of malfeasance and kidnapping charges, was sentenced to one year in prison. Judge Johnson required Steele Jr. to serve 6 months of that time and suspended the other 6 months of the sentence.

The judge noted that the maximum sentence was not warranted in this case. The charges carried 5 years of prison time.

State prosecutors and the victim asked for the judge to consider giving Steele the maximum sentence.

Steele was told to surrender at the courthouse by 9 a.m. on November 3.
