An historic ship built on the Clyde has been towed out to sea and sunk.
The Falls of Clyde was built at Port Glasgow in 1878, and was designated a National Historic Monument in the United States, operating as a museum ship in Hawaii after a long career on the high seas.
Campaigners said the ship was the last of its kind in the world, with groups in Glasgow and Hawaii, where the ship was moored since the 1970s, attempting to save the vessel for almost two decades.
But yesterday (October 15), the ship was towed 25 miles out of Honolulu Harbour and was scuttled. The Falls of Clyde was the last remaining example of a sailing oil tanker left afloat anywhere in the world, and now lies at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.
