Authorities say a Fayetteville woman accused of running an unlicensed daycare had 26 children enrolled in full-time care around the time a toddler drowned at her home in September.

According to the Fayetteville Police Department, Melissa Ann Ortiz-Fikes, 51, — identified in court records as Oritz-Fikes — was arrested Oct. 2 on three felony counts providing childcare without a license, nearly a month after police were called to her Lockerbie Court home Sept. 5 on a report of a child drowning. The charging document state's she operated Mema's Playhouse at the home.
