The government are reportedly exploring how it might overturn the decision to ban Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters from attending next month’s Europa League match against Aston Villa at Villa Park.
On Thursday, the Safety Advisory Group (SAG) informed Villa that no travelling supporters would be permitted to attend the match as away fans.
A spokesperson for West Midlands Police cited previous incidents, including scenes during last season’s match between Ajax and Maccabi supporters, as the reason for the decision.
However, the ban has faced opposition across the political spectrum. Labour leader Keir Starmer reiterated that the role of the police is to “ensure all football fans enjoy the game without fear of violence or intimidation.”
