Around 10:15 a.m. on Thursday, October 16, the Kingston Police Department arrested 30-year-old Quameik Byrd of Kingston following a report of a man allegedly abusing a dog and carrying a knife on Cedar Street in midtown.

Witnesses stated that Byrd was seen striking and kicking a young puppy and dragging it by its leash, even lifting the dog into the air in this manner. When bystanders attempted to intervene to protect the animal, Byrd allegedly produced a knife and threatened to harm them and their families. At least one of the individuals he allegedly threatened was a minor under the age of 17.

Byrd was charged with felony criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree due to a previous conviction. He has also been charged with several misdemeanors, including fourth-degree criminal
