Washington Spirit forward Trinity Rodman (2) walks up the field in the second half against San Diego Wave FC at Audi Field on Oct. 5, 2025.

U.S. women's national team forward Trinity Rodman has been diagnosed with an MCL sprain, per Washington Spirit coach Adrián González.

Rodman suffered a knee injury on Wednesday in a 4-0 Concacaf W Champions Cup win over Monterrey. Between her emotions immediately after the incident and her reappearance later with a knee brace, many had expected the worst, but scans on Thursday revealed what González called "the best-case scenario."

"She's the facility today, starting the rehab," González told reporters during a Friday press conference. "She's doing good... Obviously, an injury is not always a good situation, but it's not as bad as it could be. So, she's starting out her rehab [process]. She has an MCL sprain."

González added that the injury was considered a grade one sprain, which per the Cleveland Clinic means less than 10% of the ligament is torn. Such an injury does not require surgery.

Grade one MCL sprains can heal in three weeks or less, with The Athletic reporting Thursday that Rodman is expected to undergo three weeks of rehabilitation before all parties reevaluate her status.

A three-week timeline would rule her out for Washington's final two regular-season matches, but would potentially allow her to play some role in a playoff quarterfinal. The Spirit have clinched a playoff berth and will host that match, but the date of that game is yet to be announced.

Per González, the Spirit have not set a timetable for Rodman's return.

"We are going to take this day-by-day," said González. "Every player is completely different, and we want to support her, obviously. As a human being, right now is the most important thing is just to recover... Right now, to be honest, I cannot anticipate [her timeline]."

The Athletic's report noted that Rodman would withdraw from the USWNT's upcoming camp, which would have been a first call-up since April. U.S. Soccer has yet to confirm that news, though three upcoming friendlies against Portugal and New Zealand all fall within the three-week rehab timeline.

A persistent back injury has disrupted Rodman's 2025, with the California native appearing in only 15 of the Spirit's 24 NWSL matches this season (starting nine times).

However, Rodman returned from the summer break having seemingly put the back injury in her rear-view mirror, and has been in excellent form. The 23-year-old was named the NWSL's Player of the Month for September after producing three goals and two assists in four matches. Despite her limited involvement, Rodman has scored seven goals for Washington this season across all competitions.
