South Carolina now has 19 confirmed cases of measles as three more patients have been infected, the state Department of Public Health announced Oct. 17.
The three were among 139 students quarantining at home after being exposed to an outbreak centered on two schools in Spartanburg County, Global Academy of South Carolina and Fairforest Elementary. The new cases bring to 15 the number of cases tied to that outbreak, the state said.
All of the cases have been among people who were unvaccinated. State officials have said the large number of unvaccinated students in the Upstate adds to the concern about the current outbreak of the highly infectious virus.
