AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine Capitol Police Chief Matthew Clancy resigned from his position Oct. 8, according to a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Clancy was arrested Aug. 1 following an alleged altercation with a Hallowell police officer responding to an incident that involved him. He was apparently under the influence of alcohol.

Hallowell Police Chief Christopher Giles told the Central Maine Morning Sentinel at the time that Clancy refused arrest for disorderly conduct.

Clancy was charged with assault and placed on administrative leave the following week.

Clancy became chief of Maine Capitol Police in 2021. Prior to that, he spent about 39 years with two Massachusetts police departments.
