QUEEN CREEK, AZ (AZFamily) — An eighth grader at Eastmark High School in the Queen Creek Unified School District was removed from basketball tryouts because of a clerical error made 14 years ago. The school said he can only play on the girls team all because of a paperwork mistake.

Sitting at his kitchen island doing homework, Laker Jackson is thinking about his time out of the classroom.

“I like the team aspect of the sport a lot,” he said. “I like to play basketball, I wrestle, and I like football a lot.”

He hits every mark.

“It’s a conference championship for East Valley, I won it all for my weight class,” Laker said.

But a mark on a piece of paper 14 years ago is now standing in his way. His mom, Becky Jackson, said there was a mix-up at the hospital the day Laker was born.
