WAVELAND, Miss. (WLOX) - Former Waveland Mayor Mike Smith has passed away.

Smith was sworn in as Waveland’s mayor in December 2014 and served two terms before deciding not to seek a third term due to health issues.

The city honored Smith in a social media post saying, “Mike dedicated many years of service to the City of Waveland, including roles as a firefighter, Assistant Fire Chief, Fire Chief, and Mayor. Our thoughts and condolences are with his wife, Melanie, and his family during this difficult time.”

Smith underwent two separate kidney transplants. Both times, the organ donations came from family members. 

He was also a fierce advocate for organ donation.
