The current economy is hurting more people in the area than in the past.

Len Kutchaw, Elliot Lake Emergency Food Bank (ELEFB) chair , says they are seeing an increase in the number of people applying for food.

For this year’s Thanksgiving weekend compared to that of 2024, the number of people looking for food was up by about 10%, explains Kutchaw.

“The sad reality of it is the newer people that are coming is also a concern,” says Kutchaw. “We’ve got people that have lived here for a while, retirees that are now coming in.”

He added that they are also seeing larger families seeking help with putting food on the table. Their biggest issue is the continued rising costs.
