NBC Connecticut first met Esteban Gonzales on Oct. 8 at Sunset Ridge apartments. He was part of a group advocating for a tenant union and demonstrated how he scoots up and down the stairs with his wheelchair.

Gonzales claimed the complex wouldn’t allow him to have a chairlift installed as part of a worker’s compensation case.

“The guy said no, I have to leave,” Gonzales said.

An attorney for Capital Realty would not answer questions regarding Sunset Ridge. The denial sparked broader questions about the rights of tenants with disabilities — and the responsibilities of landlords to provide reasonable accommodations.
