Scotland's coastline is renowned for its towns and villages that are popular amongst locals and visitors alike. North Berwick, St Andrews, Oban, and Nairn are just a few of the seaside settlements that are known as top travel destinations.
However, not every coastal spot in the country is quite so beloved. One seaside East Lothian town was even once compared to the dark realm of Mordor from J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings series.
As reported by the Daily Record , Prestonpans was previously named among the "worst towns" in Scotland. One visitor even called it "hell on Earth".
At the time, Prestonpans was likened to "Sauron's castle" from The Lord of the Rings. It was described by one Scot as "like being in Mordor with a giant black monolith breathing fire in the distance",
