The first half of Saturday's game couldn't have ended worse for the Iowa football team.
Coach Kirk Ferentz called for a 66-yard field-goal attempt from Drew Stevens with 6 seconds left and a 10-7 lead.
Penn State's Xavier Gilliam blocked the kick and Elliott Washington recovered it and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown and a 14-10 lead.
Iowa had taken a 10-7 lead after Xavier Nwankpa intercepted a pass and nearly brought it to the end zone. That set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Hawkeye quarterback Mark Gronowski.
The blocked kick was a big momentum change as the teams went to the locker room at Kinnick Stadium.
