Dear Dr. John,

There is a cat that always shows up at my door every day for food and water and has done so for over a year. I have put a box out on the porch in the colder months so the cat can find some shelter. I have no idea if a neighbor owns the cat or whether I am the sole provider for it at this point. I have limited financial means. Clearly, I have no vaccine or health history for it and I am not even sure if it is male or female, but the size makes me think that it is a male cat.

For the last few days, it has had one eye closed and slowly it is starting to open. I think I see a little discharge from the eye as well. What are the possible causes? When I called around about care, I was struck by the expense. How important is it that I try and address the problem? Thanks! W.W.
