ON THIS DAY IN 1877 , the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “The Long Island Historical Society has in press and will soon publish a new historical work as a Centennial contribution to the literature of the Revolutionary period. It will be entitled, ‘The Campaign of 1776 Around New York and Brooklyn.’ It will include a new and circumstantial account of the Battle of Long Island and the capture of New York, with a review of the events that followed. The work is compiled from original letters and documents, and will be illustrated with maps, portraits, etc. The author is Mr. Henry P. Johnson. While the title of the volume may suggest that its contents will be chiefly local, the subject in reality touches the Revolutionary history of nine States.
