Waterloo Regional Police are looking into a “suspicious” fire Sunday morning on Major Street in Kitchener.
Tenants at the three-unit home sat on lawn chairs across the street as Kitchener firefighters sifted through the remains of the morning blaze. Police said, the two-storey building suffered significant damage.
Firefighters were called to the fire, in the Civic Centre area of the city, after fire alarms went off in the home around 6 a.m.
Structural damage is confined to the rear addition, where the fire originated, said Kitchener deputy fire Chief Patrick O’Halloran. Damage costs are estimated at $500,000.
Tenants were heard saying calf-high water, from fighting the fire, had reached the basement unit.
