WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - With 17% of Kansas Medicare patients living with chronic kidney disease, and nearly 150 waiting for lifesaving transplants, the Annual Kidney Walk held in Wichita on Sunday morning highlighted a growing health crisis.

The walk aims to benefit the National Kidney Foundation, specifically through the launch of public educational awareness campaigns that shine a light on kidney disease.

The event took place at Chicken-N-Pickle. One of the event organizers, Zoe Schumacher, is a patient from Wichita who was diagnosed with kidney failure at 20 years old.

Two years later, she’s had a kidney transplant and says that events like the Kidney Walk bring solidarity and support for herself, kidney patients, family members and friends.
