The Louisville Democratic Party announced Oct. 19 its members nominated Gary Clemons, a labor union leader and U.S. Army veteran, for the Kentucky Senate seat vacated by David Yates, who became interim Jefferson County Clerk days earlier.

Clemons is a lifelong South End resident who serves as president of United Steelworkers Local 1693, representing over 200 workers at American Synthetic Rubber Company in Rubbertown, according to a news release.

“We are thrilled to have Gary representing Democrats in Senate District 37,” Louisville Democratic Party Chair Logan Gatti said in a statement. “Gary is exactly the kind of leader Kentucky needs — grounded, community-driven, and unafraid to fight for working families. He brings a wealth of experience, compassion, and common sense to the table.”
