WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) - A man is in custody following an apartment fire early Sunday morning.

Around 5 a.m., firefighters with the Wichita Fire Department were called to the 1200 block of S. Pershing Ave. for the report of an apartment fire.

When crews arrived, they saw light smoke coming from the building. While some firefighters worked to extinguish the fire, others searched the structure. Inside, they found a victim and removed them from the building.

Firefighters said the victim was initially in extremely critical condition but was stabilized to serious condition before being turned over to EMS.

The Fire Investigations Unit determined the fire was intentionally set. After further investigation by on-scene investigators, officers took a 52-year-old man into custody.
