MANCHESTER, N.H. —
Dozens of people in New Hampshire have new smoke alarms thanks to the American Red Cross.
The nonprofit hosted a fire safety event Sunday in the Mount Washington Valley, where volunteers installed 78 free smoke alarms for local families.
The Red Cross said working smoke alarm provide critical early warning signs of fires and can reduce the risk of fire-related deaths and injuries by 50%.

The event was part of the Red Cross's National Home Fire Campaign, which launched in 2014 and has saved thousands of lives.
Volunteers also shared tips on preventing home fires and how to safely escape if one occurs.
