Residents in North Frontenac Township were ordered to evacuate their homes on Sunday evening as a wildfire spread in the area. The fire, located between South Lavant Road and Snow Road, prompted the closure of Highway 509 shortly before 6 p.m. This closure affected the stretch from north of Mississippi Station to south of Ompah.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reported that the fire was advancing north and east due to strong winds. In a social media update, the OPP stated, "Residents in that area are evacuating."

By 7:44 p.m., the township announced that an emergency evacuation center had been established at the Ompah Community Hall, located at 10200 Highway 509. Another evacuation center was opened at the Snow Road Community Hall at 14073 Road 509.

The North Frontenac Township Emergency Control Group convened to monitor the situation. They indicated that the OPP would conduct door-to-door checks if further evacuations became necessary.

As of late Sunday, no additional details about the fire were available. The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources has classified most of Frontenac County, north of Verona, as being at high risk for forest fires.

North Frontenac Township is situated approximately 130 kilometers southwest of Ottawa. Authorities are expected to provide ongoing updates as the situation develops.
