Danny Rohl once hailed Russell Martin for being at the "next level" to his team when Southampton smashed his Sheffield Wednesday side last year.
The 36-year-old German has become the latest frontrunner in Rangers' bid to replace Martin, who was sacked two weeks ago following a disastrous spell in charge.
Rohl went up against the former Scotland international when he was Sheffield Wednesday manager and Martin was in charge of Southampton in an English Championship match in January last year.
Martin masterminded the Saints to a 4-0 demolition in which current Scotland striker Che Adams netted and former Scotland winger Ryan Fraser also scored for the hosts.
