Colombia has recalled its ambassador to the United States, hours after Donald Trump announced he would would raise tariffs on the South American nation, in a feud that stems from the American military's strikes on vessels allegedly transporting drugs.

The Colombian foreign ministry said on Monday, local time that the country's ambassador in Washington DC, Daniel García-Peña, had already returned to Bogotá.

Chancellor Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio Mapy also confirmed the Colombian government would soon release more details about why President Gustavo Petro Urrego ordered Mr García-Peña to be recalled.

On Sunday, local time, Mr Trump called Mr Petro an "illegal drug leader" and said the US would slash financial assistance to Colombia because its president "does nothing to stop" illicit drug
