Brockville is adding its voice to regional calls for reliable passenger train service, following the recent postponement of Via Rail’s plans to reduce stops in the area.
Mayor Matt Wren is scheduled to introduce a motion at Tuesday’s meeting of council’s general committee, calling on Via Rail Canada to maintain adequate passenger rail service in the region, and look at improvements.
The motion, included on the general committee agenda as a new business item, echoes a similar call from Kingston’s city council earlier this month.
Via Rail last month announced a three-month direct service pilot project on select Montreal-to-Toronto trains. Trains 60, 61, 68, and 69 were to run non-stop between Montreal and Toronto, and the schedule of Train 50 was to be reduced. The changes would have
