PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The day Jacob Lemire was shot to death was the day "Chad Brown lost its sunshine," according to his mother.

"He was always happy, always smiling," Holly Lemire said.

Jacob, who grew up in the shadow of the Chad Brown housing complex, was shot while going to grab a bite to eat in October 2020.

The 21-year-old was riding in a car with his friend when the two were hit by gunfire on Douglas Avenue.

Providence Police Maj. David Lapatin told 12 News that Jacob's friend, who was driving, lost control of the vehicle and crashed near Orms Street.

"We tracked it back and believe the shooting happened at Chalkstone and Douglas [avenues]," Lapatin said.

Jacob died on the way to the hospital. His friend was critically wounded, but ultimately survived.
