After voting against an affordable housing proposal in March , city council narrowly approved rezoning for an amended version Monday.
“We’re thrilled,” said project proponent Myles Vanni, with the Inn of the Good Shepherd.
“We feel this is a good settlement, a good compromise.”
Vanni and the local non-profit in March proposed a six-storey, 56-unit apartment building along Exmouth Street, and six one-storey townhouse units on Melrose Avenue.
The then-estimated-$26-million plan would have combined four property parcels to provide below-market rent to tenants for at least 25 years.
Sarnia, coping with homelessness and poverty, needs thousands of units of affordable housing, Vanni said.
The charity in March appealed council’s decision to the Ontario Land Tribunal.
