STATESVILLE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- Two weeks after a controversial data center was approved in Statesville, City Council voted to make the sprawling property part of the city.

Monday night the council voted unanimously to annex the 350-acre site just west south of Interstate 40 and west of Stamey Farm Road. Data centers house computer systems, servers, and network equipment used to store, process, and distribute digital information.

City leaders say the land’s current tax value is $1.1 million, and once developed, will be worth more than $100 million.

The annexation means that the city will provide water and sewer services, and Duke Energy will provide power.
