WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) - Construction to expand the elephant enclosure at the Sedgwick County Zoo began on Monday.

The zoo welcomed four baby elephants over the summer, Bomani, Kijani, Asali, and last but not least, Dakari.

Zoo leaders believe the upgrade will be vital for their growth and the overall well being of the herd.

"In order for us to have elephants for my grandkids, your grandkids to see and enjoy and learn we are going to have to be very responsible stewards of that population," Scott Newland, president and CEO of Sedgewick County Zoo, said.

The elephant barn will be closed to the public during winter, but the babies will be outside when weather permits.
