CONNECTICUT, USA — A New Haven parent is calling for an increased oversight of homeschooled children across the state in honor of 11-year-old Jaqueline “Mimi” Torres-Garcia to ensure no child ever disappears unnoticed again.

A new proposal known as Mimi’s Law is gaining attention statewide. In just five days, nearly 14,000 people have signed a petition in support of the proposal, which urges lawmakers to require regular check-ins and welfare assessments for all homeschooled students.

“I would like to work together. Even aside from this bill, I would like to enact different changes and initiatives to create more community and protect children from this even happening again,” said petitioner Los Fidel of New Haven.
