EAST LANSING – When Marissa Monteith was in eighth grade, her parents gave her an ultimatum.

If she was going to give up softball, she would still have to play a school sport.

She chose golf.

“My grandpa lives on a golf course and I’ve played golf for fun growing up. I guess I was pretty good at it, but never really took it seriously,” recalled Monteith, now a junior at Macomb Dakota. “I never really took it= seriously until I got to high school. I tried out for the golf team and I don’t even think the coach knew who I was at first.

“My parents said there was no way I would just sit around after school and not do anything,” she added. “I wasn’t about to sit around, either.”
