On Monday evening, more than 200 people gathered in the Rackham Auditorium for an event hosted by the Wallace House Center for Journalists , where journalist and author Karen Hao discussed her new book, “ Empire of AI: Dreams and Nightmares in Sam Altman’s OpenAI. ”The discussion was moderated by assistant Law professor Patrick Barry.
In her book, Hao argues that OpenAI and other similar generative AI companies operate as modern empires by extracting resources , exploiting labor and concentrating benefits for a small group of elite while generating broad societal costs that often go unseen.
“The type of AI system that completely captivated the public’s imagination and dominated headlines today, the kind of large-scale, general purpose systems being designed in Silicon Valle
