The Cathedral City Lions started Sun Valley League play the same way they ended their non-league schedule, by playing winning football.
Trace Vargas's 10-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter helped the Lions overcome a halftime deficit against the Desert Mirage Rams on the way to a 20-14 victory Friday in the Sun Valley League opener for both teams in Thermal.
The win leveled Cathedral City's record at 4-4 for the year, but was the Lions' third consecutive win. Desert Mirage fell to 3-5 for the season.
Vargas' touchdown with 10 minutes left in the third quarter turned out to be the only score in the final two periods for the two teams. The Rams held a 14-12 halftime lead in a spirited battled between teams playing in the final season of the Sun Valley League. All desert teams w
