The National Weather Service (NWS) had issued beach hazard statements for several regions along the West Coast as of early Tuesday, warning of both large breaking waves and sneaker waves.

"A Beach Hazards Statement is issued when sneaker waves create potentially life-threatening conditions in the surf zone," the NWS explained in an advisory affecting parts of Oregon and Washington. "Caution should be used when in or near the water."

In Oregon, a beach hazards statement was in effect for all beaches and surf off Douglas, Coos, and Curry Counties.

Here, the NWS warned of a risk of sneaker waves and large breaking waves of 21 to 24 feet in the surf zone. Waves were most likely to be dangerous during the run-up to high tide, it said.
