Relatives, friends and coworkers dressed in chef coats gathered at a New Orleans funeral home Monday afternoon to celebrate the life of Carl Morgan, a sous chef at Brennan’s Restaurant whose humor, culinary skill and devotion to his family left a lasting impression on those who knew him.

Dozens filled the pews of the chapel at Jacob Schoen and Son Funeral Home, bowing their heads and embracing. Others huddled together near Morgan’s casket, adorned with white flowers and a glowing purple lightsaber — a nod to another one of his greatest passions, Star Wars.

Three weeks earlier and just a few blocks up the street, Morgan was picking up his son, Silas, at a Mid-City day care when he was shot and killed during a carjacking . He was 36.
