BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —

Alabama public schools are facing a decline in enrollment, with nearly 6,000 fewer students this year, as the state implements the Choose Act, providing parents with more flexibility in non-public school options.

Dr. Eric Mackey, the state superintendent, said that only about half of the 5,800 students who left public schools have transitioned to private schools or homeschooling.

The whereabouts of the other half remain unknown, as the state lacks information on how these students are receiving their education this school year.

It is possible that some students are homeschooling without formally withdrawing from their local school boards.

Despite the overall decline in enrollment, Legacy Prep, a public charter school in Birmingham, is experiencing growth.
