(CNN) - The Coast Guard has bought two Gulfstream private jets for Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and other top department officials.

The New York Times reported the two aircraft cost $172 million.

The Washington Post put the cost at $200 million, including funds for training, new paint and cabin updates.

Both figures are far higher than the $50 million the Coast Guard requested for a new jet this year.

A Department of Homeland Security official said the aircraft were needed for safety.
