Most regulated day care spaces cost less today than in 2021.

The federal government has made childcare across the country more affordable, according to a new report from the Auditor-General, but may fall short of its goal of creating thousands of spaces over five years.

The report, one of six tabled in the House of Commons Tuesday, concludes that Employment and Social Development Canada has fulfilled its responsibilities to support the quality, affordability, access, inclusion and flexibility of early learning and childcare, providing $35-billion in funding from April, 2021, to March, 2026, to provincial, territorial and Indigenous partners.

The federal program is based on Quebec’s model, which has been in place for decades.
