PORTLAND, Ore. — A batch of pretzels contaminated with oven cleaner was mistakenly served to sixth graders during lunch Monday at Fowler Middle School in Tigard.

"We understand that today's food incident created significant alarm within our school community," Principal Cindy Pellicci said in a letter sent to families.

In total, 37 pretzels were distributed. It's unclear how they became contaminated. According to the Oregon Poison Control Center, the oven cleaner brand, Alto Shaam, can cause a burning sensation if ingested and may lead to vomiting if consumed in large quantities.

The school said it immediately contacted the poison control center and began identifying which students ate the pretzels. No details have been provided about how many of the contaminated pretzels were consumed.
