A man who was hit by a train yesterday has died, police have confirmed.

Trains were cancelled or delayed for several hours while emergency services dealt with the incident.

Southeastern warned customers at around 1.50pm that the Medway Valley Line would be affected between Strood and Paddock Wood.

A spokesman for the British Transport Police (BTP) has since issued a tragic update.

He said: “Officers were called at around 1.20pm on October 20 to reports of a casualty on the tracks at a level crossing in Maidstone.

“Officers responded with paramedics. However, sadly, a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Inquiries into the circumstances leading up to the incident are ongoing.”

The deceased is believed to be a man in his 50s.
