LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A man who federal agents were trying to apprehend was shot and a U.S Marshal was struck in the hand by a ricochet bullet during an immigration enforcement operation in South Angeles Tuesday morning.

The shooting unfolded shortly before 9 a.m. on E. 20th Street near Trinity Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

ICE agents, with the assistance of U.S. Marshals, were conducting a traffic stop on a man who allegedly escaped from custody previously, according to a statement from Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary for the Department of Homeland Security.

The man is accused of ramming into a law enforcement vehicle "in an attempt to flee," the statement read. That's when federal agents opened fire.
